Plus changes to parent/teacher conferences, institute days and early dismissals days.

The 2013-14 Oswego District 308 school year calendar may be seeing some big changes, including start date, semester end date and teacher institute days. “This calendar should truly reflect not only what was important to parents, teachers, administrators and the board, but the overarching goal to make sure calendar served the goal of teaching and learning in the district,” said Superintendent Matthew Wendt at the school board's Monday night meeting..  “Is it perfect? No. Is it improved? Yes?” The tentative draft of the new calendar would have students in grades 1-12 beginning school Monday, Aug. 19, rather than in the middle of the week as it has been. Kindergarten would start that Tuesday. Board president Bill Walsh did not like the change…

Teacher Contract Narrowly Approved by Oswego Education Association Teachers

The three-year contract addresses salary and pay steps and high school teaching hours.

The Oswego Education Association (OEA) and the Oswego 308 board of education have officially agreed on a three-year contract. Members of the OEA voted Jan. 18 to approve the contract, which the board of education had previously unanimously approved Jan. 14 with board president Bill Walsh abstaining from the vote because his wife is a teacher in the district. A tentative agreement was reached prior to winter break, but voting wasn't held until January. Want free local news in your inbox every morning? Sign up for our e-newsletter. The vote was “closer than any I’ve ever been a part of,” said President of the OEA, Darla Medernach. The vote for the teacher’s union passed 544 - 445 in favor of the contract. One of the largest sticking points …

Oswego Schools Installing Security Camera and Buzzer System

Due to the earlier incident in December, the decision was made to ensure that the schools were not only safe, but also that students and staff feel safe.

Oswego District 308 schools will be seeing the addition of a camera and buzzer system in the next few weeks for an added security measure in all schools. Superintendent Matthew Wendt addressed the board Monday night about the security measures, which are being implemented in part due to supposed rumors that circulated around some of the schools in December. “Because of that situation and the overwhelming response of not only ensuring our schools are safe, but also the feeling of being safe, we looked at this device to allow for some buzzer-camera systems for the schools,” said Wendt. The system would involve having a buzzer on every outside door of the schools along with cameras to allow school staff to see who was at the door. Sign up for…

They didn't already have the buzzer/cameras? Even Plainfield 202 schools have had this! JT - I do not think bullet proof glass is the answer - murderers will just use 1st floor classroom windows as an entrance - plus who would pay for them - our taxes are already sky high and our kids get crummy class selections and no funding in extra-curr. activities. Oswego District 308 Warns of School Violence Rumors

School posts announcement and a worried parent contacts Patch about her children attending school tomorrow.

The Mayan calendar states that next Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, is the end of the world. Oswego District 308 officials are taking action about rumors that there is a threat of violence set to occur in the school district due to this belief in the Mayan calendar. The following statement was posted to the district's website early this afternoon: It has come to our attention that rumors have been circulating around our school community about December 21, our last day of school before winter break, and winter solstice, which marks the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar.   The media hype surrounding this date has resulted in predictions that include such things as a national power outage to the end of the world. District 308 Adopts 2012 Tentative Levy with 4.9 Percent Increase

Assistant superintendent Paul O’Malley said actual amount is expected to be reduced through the County clerk.

The Oswego District 308 school board voted 6-0 in favor of adopting the 2012 tentative levy with a 4.98 percent increase. Assistant superintendent Paul O’Malley said this levy is just a proposal that must still be approved by the County clerk. He said the clerk is expected to reduce the proposal from the suggested 4.98 percent to near 3.1 percent. “The reason we levy higher is there could be new property,” said O’Malley. “If we fail to capture that new property, those new obligations will fall on the current taxpayer.” Want free local news in your inbox every morning?
