The fundraiser for a Naperville church will begin at 9 a.m.
After receiving approval from the Plainfield Village Board in March, the annual Eikon 5K fundraiser race is set to step off at 9 a.m. Saturday from Plainfield North High School, 12005S. 248th Ave. The race, which benefits outreach efforts of Calvary Church in Naperville, will travel north on 248th Avenue to Commissioners Park in Naperville. The race raises money for the Eikon program, benefitting students in Ethiopia and missionary work to bring education, job skills training and community development to those in need. Plainfield police are urging residents to be aware of the following race-related road closures, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday: All roads will remain closed until approximately 10:30 a.m., police said.

Event benefits Plainfield North High School track and field.
Runners and walkers will be out in force around Plainfield North High School this Saturday for the Fast Cat 5K. The event, which benefits the PNHS track and field teams, will consist of two races and kicks off at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 30. Due to the large number of participants expected, Plainfield police are advising drivers to expect increased traffic and temporary road closures in and around PNHS. The first race, the Fast Cat 1 Mile Kids Run, starts at 8 a.m. on the property of PNHS and will not affect the adjacent roadways, according to police. The second race is the 5K/10K/2 x 5K relay run, which starts at 8:45 a.m. and involves two laps of the course route. This race begins at PNHS and heads north on 248th Avenue to Millennium …

Another driver struck the back of the bus as it stopped before the tracks, according to officials.
For the second time this week, a Plainfield School District school bus was involved in a crash Wednesday afternoon. District 202 Community Relations Director Tom Hernandez said the First Student bus was rear-ended while it was stopped before proceeding across the railroad tracks on Lockport Street near Eastern Avenue. By law, school buses are required to come to a complete stop before proceeding through a railroad crossing. Ryan is one of about 15,000 students nationwide to be named a 2012-13 National Merit Scholarship Finalist. The 2012-2013 school year is the 58th year of the prestigious program, which honors academically talented high school seniors and lets them compete for 8,300 National Merit Scholarship awards, worth more than $32 million. The awards will be announced next spring. To become a National Merit Finalist, students must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier qualifying performance. …

The teen will compete in Classical Singer Magazine singing contest this May in Boston.
A Plainfield North High School senior's voice is getting her noticed. Last September, Karlie Traversa, 17, was named a finalist in a singing contest at Milikin University's College Vocal Festival. Traversa, who competed with more than 100 high schoolers from throughout Illinois, was selected as a "top 5" finalist and earned an honorable mention for her performance. More recently, Traversa competed in Classical Singer Magazine's national classical singer contest. After auditioning at North Park University in Chicago, the Plainfield teen was chosen as a contestant in the high school division and went on to be selected as a first-round finalist. Mom Treshia Bullock said her daughter, Taylor Bullock, and friends Annie Schaafsma and Wes Higgenbotham filmed the episode over the summer. The show airs at 5 p.m. Central time on Thursday, Jan. 24. The District 202 students will be part of the 79th annual McDonald's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
The Plainfield North High School band will march on State Street during the 2012 McDonald's Thanksgiving Day Parade in Chicago. PNHS Director of Bands Steven Pyter said the Marching Tigers submitted an application plus photos, videos and a list of accomplishments in their bid to be part of the parade last spring. The approximately 150 students learned they'd been accepted in August. "The band has quickly earned a reputation for excellence in the past few years," Pyter said. Bowl for Buccini, June 16, will raise funds for P.E. Teacher Chad Buccini who is fighting brain cancer
Family, friends and co-workers are coming together to raise money in support of Chad Buccini, a Plainfield Academy teacher who is battling brain cancer. Buccini, who teaches physical education for the academy’s Turnabout program, suffered a seizure in class in April. Four students were honored for coming to his aid, calling 911, following the dispatcher’s instructions and alerting other scademy staff until an ambulance arrived. He was then taken to Adventist Hospital in Bolingbrook, and after a series of tests, a tumor was discovered on the right side of his brain. The tumor, an oligodendroglioma, originated in the brain and may have been growing for 10 years. It is uncommon, but treatable. “It was such a shock for someone as healthy as …
