Garrett Peck filed a petition for discovery seeking the account information and IP addresses for Plainfield Patch users, saying they hurt his election prospects.
Plainfield village trustee Garrett Peck wants to identify anonymous online commenters, saying they posted false information that hurt his bid to become an Illinois state senator. Peck, who was defeated in November 2012 by Democrat Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant for the 49th District seat, said he wants to uncover the commenters' identities, including a Plainfield Patch user, so he can potentially sue for damages. In a petition for discovery filed Tuesday in Cook County Circuit Court, Peck is asking Plainfield Patch and Topix, a local online discussion board, to provide information about several commenters. He claims they are responsible for derailing his campaign. The petition asks Patch to turn over the users' account information and IP …

Did a Lockport Street druggist come up with the creamy creation? Or is the story just sugar-coated history?
Today, you can find it in any town in the United States — whether you prefer yours with hot fudge, with or without nuts or topped with a cherry, the ice cream sundae is an American staple. But the sweet treat was a novelty back in the 1890s, when 24-year-old Charles Sonntag introduced the sundae at his pharmacy and soda fountain on Lockport Street. Today, the location is home to Back on the Rack. But was the creamy concoction truly invented here? That’s the mystery filmmakers will unravel in an upcoming PBS documentary, which takes a look at the four towns that claim the distinction of being the first place to serve up a sundae. The special, “The Mysterious Origin of the Ice Cream Sundae,” will feature a guest appearance from Plainfield …

Leaving Plainfield to help start a new Patch in Joliet stirs up memories and bittersweet emotions; new editor Shannon Antinori starts Monday.
From a journalistic perspective, I hate goodbye columns. It makes everything seem so final. But this is, indeed, a goodbye column. As of Monday, I take on new duties helping oversee the launch of the new Joliet Patch. It marks the end of a two-year journey with Plainfield Patch that's been one of the highlights of a long, interesting career. Plainfield was one of the first towns in Illinois to get a Patch, and I remember writing in my first column that the whole process of getting it off the ground was a little like giving birth. When the baby arrives, you think the hard part is over only to realize the real job -- keeping baby alive -- had just begun. Thanks to you, our readers, baby's not only alive, but thriving. Your support from day …

It's easy to buy Mom a card that expresses your feelings with someone else's words, but why spend $3 when you can write down your own sentiments and post them for all to see. Here's the deal: You send us a note with a personal note for your mother and we will publish here, on Plainfield Patch, on Mother's Day. Something short and sweet will work -- "We love you, Mom. From your kids, Mary and Joe" -- but you can write an ode, too, if you're so inclined. There's no limit on length. There's no expense involved, and we'll bet mom will be busting a few buttons with pride knowing all of her friends can see what a great kid she's raised. And don't forget grandmas are moms, too. You can post a note for grandma, your mother-in-law, your daughter …

No, you're not losing it! Plainfield Patch looks different today. We did a quick visual nip-and-tuck to the homepage to make it even more user-friendly. And we've moved a couple pieces of furniture. For those keeping score: And of course we prettified a few things. While the site might look a little different today, we still offer the same robust coverage of everything happening in Plainfield. That was, is, and will always be our mission. We hope you'll let us know what you think of our tweaks – so feel free to offer a comment below!

An IDOT Web site allows motorists to see which roads are clear of ice and snow and which aren't. A new Patch feature lets drivers look at live traffic via Mapquest.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the entire Chicago-area, forecasting 3 to 5 inches for Plainfield to start falling after 9 a.m. Thursday. If that's not bad enough, later afternoon and evening will be even more fun when the snow starts blowing at gusts of up to 30 mph, creating windchills that will make 13-degree temps Thursday night feel like 2 below. While we can't make the winter weather go away, Plainfield Patch and the Illinois Department of Transportation have tools that will make driving a little less of a surprise. IDOT's Getting Around Illinois Web site is designed to give area motorists a glimpse into snowy or icy road conditions around the state. And you can get a look at live traffic …

These are the articles on our Web site that had the highest number of readers in the last year, our data shows.
For better or worse, the best thing about being an online newspaper is knowing exactly which stories hit a nerve with our readers and those that barely made a ripple. It will probably come as no surprise that among the best-read stories on Plainfield Patch were those that had to do with crime, but there were also a few surprises. 1. Man faces attempted murder charge for beating his mother with a bat. 2. Driver who killed Route 59 motorcyclist was intoxicated. 3. Plainfield man charged with attempting to kill wife, shooting daughter. 4. Drew Peterson marks two years in jail awaiting trial. 5. Plainfield man injured in fatal road rage fight. 6. Lingerie's the lure but football's the game for Chicago Bliss' Heather Furr. 7. Finnegan's loses …

Did you know you could say "thank you" on Plainfield Patch? That's right: the announcements' section of this site has a subcategory meant for all those "thank you’s" out there. The announcements post directly to our site. With holiday season under way, a "thank you" announcement could be a great and easy way to publicly show gratitude. It's also a great outlet to allow your child to share his or her thoughts and to thank someone who has made a difference in his or her life. All you need to do is log in to the site and hover over the news tab at the top of the home page and then click on "announcements." From there you can choose "add an announcement" and under category, select "thank you." And while we're talking about "thank yous," …

Whether done anonomously or publicly, a case of willful maliciousness with intent to inflict damage should be relatively easy to sort out from a case of a wiseguy just being a wiseguy. Somebody publicly saying your mama has a fat butt is alot different than somebody publicly saying that they observed her firsthand shoplifting. One being a snide and stupid comment, the other being a malicious lie …   more ›
