Village Looks to Fill Vacancy on Plainfield Plan Commission

Plan Commissioner Cyndi Fulco has stepped down, and the village is accepting applications.

The Village of Plainfield is looking to fill an open spot on the Plan Commission. Commissioner Cyndi Fulco recently resigned, leaving a vacancy on the committee, which serves in advisory capacity by making recommendations to the board on planning issues including annexations, rezonings, site plan reviews, special uses, plats and variances. "I will still be very involved in happenings in Plainfield," Fulco said, adding she remains on the Plainfield Fest Committee and is the chairperson for women's issues with the Plainfield Junior Woman's Club. Applications are being accepted until the position is filled. A professional background in planning, architecture, engineering, residential or commercial entitlement, or land use law is helpful, …

Easter Seals Group Home Proposal Met with Opposition

Some Heritage Meadows homeowners voiced concerns about plans to bring a home for men with developmental disabilities to Plainfield.

Plainfield plan commissioners were on board with a plan to bring an Easter Seals group home to the village, but their vote in favor of the proposal drew the ire of some residents who turned out to an Aug. 21 public hearing. A few homeowners expressed disapproval as they left the boardroom following the commission’s 5-0 vote — including an older man who raised his middle finger at commissioners as he departed. But most residents, many of whom live in the Heritage Meadows subdivision, were more measured in their reaction to Easter Seals’ plan to bring a group home to 24212 W. Apple Tree Lane. The house, purchased by Easter Seals Joliet Region after it went into foreclosure, would provide a residence for six men between the ages of 34 and 57…

Reading these posts I am saddened that we would speak so negatively or be so FEAR based that we would oppose something so generous and kind as to give human beings a HOME. We are more kind to neglected animals than we are to human beings. We worry about our property values, when we should be worrying about these men who have not had a stable home. What if you had children that were blind or deaf …   more ›

Plan Commission Votes No on Gas Station Plan

Rezoning and special use request for Route 30/Route 59 project will go before the village board next.

In the end, all seven plan commissioners came to the same conclusion regarding a proposed gas station at Route 30/Joliet Road and Route 59, voting to recommend denial of a developer’s rezoning and special use request. “I can’t support the filling station or the drive-through,” Chairman James Sobkoviak said of the proposal, which calls for a BP station, eight fuel pumps, a 3,600-square-foot convenience store and a drive-thru such as a Dunkin’ Donuts or a Subway restaurant. The project received pushback from some residents, who were opposed to a new gas station occupying the former site of the Go-Tane station. That station was demolished to make way for the Route 59 widening project. Back when the Go-Tane was built, Sobkoviak said, "There …

I agree completely. I don't know where some of these people come up with these bids. Kind of similar to the purchasing of the homes for the Renwick bridge. All that money when they aren't worth nothin.   more ›

Gas Station Plan Gets Pushback from Residents

Homeowners oppose plan to bring new business to the former site of the Go-Tane station.

For years, a gas station sat at the corner of Route 30 and Route 59. But in 2008, thanks to federal and state funding, work began on an $89 million project to widen Route 59 and alleviate the bottleneck at Route 30. Amidst the construction, the former Go-Tane station, by then vacant, was demolished, leaving green space at the intersection. Now, a developer known as G.C. Real Estate LLC is looking to build a new gas station at the site. Proposed as a BP station, the project includes a canopy with eight fuel pumps and a 3,600-square-foot convenience store with a drive-thru business — possibly a Subway restaurant, according to project architect Eric Eriksson. The plan also designates a triangular 4,500-square-foot section at the hard corner …

Dunkin' Donuts May Be Headed to Spot at Route 59 and Main Street

Building owner Carl Bryant says he needs a drive-through permit from the village before the fast-food restaurant can fill the former American Bicycle storefront.

A fourth Plainfield Dunkin' Donuts store will open near the corner of Route 59 and Main Street/Route 126 if the village allows the business to have a drive-through window. Building owner Carl Bryant has applied for a special-use permit for the storefront, located at the eastern end the Main Street Square strip mall at 23915 W. Main St. The request will go before the Plainfield Plan Commission on Jan. 17 and the Plainfield Village Board in February. Bryant said there's been interest in the 1,300-square-foot former American Bicycle shop location, which has been vacant for about a year, but he's been waiting for a tenant that would "complement" the property. "What's nice about the location is it's on the south side of the road," making it …

I saw an ex park district person making comments to the board on why not to allow the store. I would like for that person to know I'll take (4) 24 hour drive-ups next to my home over the septic contaminated ponding that is near my property and also covers part of the park districts bike path. This condition was of no concern to that person at the time they could have got involved. Welcome to …   more ›

Old High School Site Proposed for 340-Unit Apartment Complex

The village board will review annexation and rezoning for the 127th Street project tonight.

The site of a former Lutheran high school on 127th Street will be transformed into a 17-building apartment complex under plans pending before the Plainfield Village Board tonight. Continental Properties Co., of Menomonee Falls, Wis., has proposed the project, which calls for 340 apartment units and a clubhouse on 27 acres at 23756 127th St., east of Route 59. The first steps are to annex and rezone the site from agricultural to R-4 residential, which the board will review at tonight’s meeting. A site plan and preliminary plat are slated to go before the Plainfield Plan Commission Tuesday night. The initial plans have the endorsement of village staff and the plan commission, which found the location appropriate for higher-density …
