Letters to the Editor

Letter: DuPage Riverfront Foundation — Is it Good for the River?

Plainfield Patch publishes letters to the editor up to 300 words long.

For the past couple of years, I’ve watched as the Plainfield Riverfront Foundation has been clearing the banks of the DuPage River in order to provide better views for the Riverfront Park.  Although this stand of growth along the river is narrow, it is still a riparian habitat that is vital to the health of the river.  This riparian zone serves as a buffer between land and water.  This small but delicate area is home to countless birds and mammals.  The undergrowth and dead trees that are being removed provide bank stabilization when the river rises, causing less sediment runoff.  Perhaps the most important factor in the river’s health is the shade that is provided from the trees and foliage.  This shade helps to regulate water temps, …

Mr. Hurst makes some valid points. Has the Riverfront Foundation consulted with an ecologist, wildlife biologist, etc. to ensure that their actions along the banks of the river aren't actually doing more harm than good? I'm sure the FPDWC or the Army Corps would be able and/or willing to offer direction that would ensure the Riverfront remain a viable wildlife habitat-which in turn creates a more…   more ›

MainStreet Plainfield Closes Up Shop

The organization, which was dedicated to promoting downtown Plainfield business, has folded, according to an email from Executive Director Susan Erickson.

MainStreet Plainfield Inc., the non-profit dedicated to preserving downtown Plainfield and increasing traffic at businesses there, has ceased operations, and village officials are looking for volunteers to keep at least one of the organization’s annual events going. On Monday, Planner Michael Garrigan said while the village itself has no plans to take on the responsibility of running Cruise Nights, it's working to help volunteers take the reins from the now-defunct MainStreet. Sign up for the Plainfield Patch newsletter. “We are working with volunteers to make it a success,” Garrigan said of the summertime event, which draws classic car enthusiasts to downtown Plainfield. Traditionally, Cruise Nights take place on Tuesday nights from May …

I agree, its sad to see anyone close its doors. However my tax bill doesn't reflect small village it looks like a upscale village or town tax bill creeping into $9,000.00 and for what, I don't see us getting much... we don't even have a single bathroom in any park around town. I look at my tax bill and look out the window from my car as I drive by our parks and see port-o-potty's and think whats …   more ›

Let the Fests Begin: Plainfield Trustees OK Irish Parade, Summer Events

The Plainfield Hometown Irish Parade will return this St. Patrick’s Day, while Plainfield Fest and the Midwest Brewers Festival are a go for summer 2013.

Winter is well under way, but Plainfield trustees were planning ahead for summer Monday as they signed off on plans for this year’s Plainfield Fest and Midwest Brewers Festival. The village board also approved road closures for the Village Preservation Association's 2013 Plainfield Hometown Irish Parade, which is set to step off at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 17. The event, which got its start as a small neighborhood St. Patrick’s Day celebration, drew more than 6,000 spectators last year, according to Tom Ruane of the Village Preservation Association. Eleven years later, the parade has made its way into downtown Plainfield and is held in conjunction with a fundraiser for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. “It grows every year because of everyone’s …

Organizer: Midwest Brewers Fest 'A Screaming Success'

This year's event took place Aug. 25 at Riverfront Park.

Organizers for Midwest Brewers Fest said the 2012 event raised more than $41,000 in just six hours — including $25,000 for the Plainfield Riverfront Foundation. “We had another successful year, and look forward to an even better 2013,” said organizer Rahul Wahi. He estimated attendance at more than 3,000 for the second annual fest, which drew more than 60 breweries from throughout the country. Along with the $25,000 donation to the Riverfront Foundation, $5,000 was raised for Pints for Prostates, Wahi said. Held at Riverfront Park along the DuPage River, this year’s Aug. 25 event was an “ode to brewers,” Wahi said in a press release. Riverfront Foundation President Rob Epley said he learned of the donation on Friday. While he said he …

The third annual event took place Sept. 15 and 16 in downtown Plainfield.

Lockport St. Organizers chalked up the record attendance to some new elements added this year, including a fireworks show, a new “Taste of Plainfield” food court theme and tethered hot air balloon rides. “We truly expanded our offerings this year, kicking it up a notch with a Wine & Jazz event on Friday night, a premier car show, exceptional music all weekend long, along with added special features, such as the hot air balloon and added kid friendly activities,” Plainfield Riverfront Foundation President Rob Epley said in an email. “[It was] …
