Plainfield Girls Lacrosse Team in the Works

A mandatory meeting for parents of interested players is Thursday at Plainfield East High School.

A Plainfield mom is hoping to generate interest in girls lacrosse at District 202 high schools. Bonnie Hughes is launching Cheetah Lacrosse, a club team open to girls at all four District 202 high schools. After moving to Plainfield from Naperville, Bonnie Hughes said her daughter, Chasia, was dismayed to learn that District 202 has no lacrosse program. “She’s been playing since fourth grade,” Hughes said. “She’s actually a coach now with the Illinois Girls Lacrosse Association.” After seeing her daughter miss out on the sport as a student at John F. Kennedy Middle School, Hughes is working to bring lacrosse to District 202. “Lacrosse is an emerging sport in the state of Illinois,” Hughes said, explaining that while several area districts …

Plainfield Teens Earn Accolades at State Journalism Competition

Students from three of the district's four high school earned top honors at the competition last month at Eastern Illinois University.

Submitted by Plainfield School District 202: Four students from Plainfield East and South high schools and Plainfield High School – Central Campus earned top honors at the 2013 Illinois High School Association’s state journalism competition. The event was held April 26 at Eastern Illinois University. The students were among 10 District 202 students to qualify for the completion.  These students also qualified for State but did not place:

Plainfield Academy Administrator Becomes New Student Services Director

Tim Albores will start his new role next school year.

Submitted by Plainfield School District 202: Plainfield Academy Assistant Principal Tim Albores will take a new position next school year as the Student Services department’s new assistant director. The District 202 Board of Education approved naming Albores to the post at its regular meeting on May 13, 2013. Albores will replace current assistant director Joe Schimmel, who is resigning after a year in the role. “We are very excited to be bringing Tim to the district office,” said Mina Griffith, Assistant Superintendent for Student Services. “He has really proven his leadership abilities in his time at Plainfield Academy and we are confident he is going to do an excellent job serving all 30 of our schools,” she said. Plainfield School District Athletes Qualify for Girls State Track Meet

Teens from three of District 202's four high schools will send girls to the state event in Charleston.

Plainfield School District 202 will be well represented this weekend at the Illinois High School Association Girls State Track Meet this weekend at O'Brien Stadium in St. Charles.  Three of the four high schools in the district will send qualifiers to the meet. Plainfield High Schoolers Win First-Ever Foundation For Excellence 'Horizon Grants'

Three juniors won $1,000 grants to broaden their academic horizons.

Submitted by Plainfield School District 202: The “horizon” just got a little closer for three District 202 high school juniors, who will use a new grant from the Plainfield Foundation for Excellence to help pay for summer learning enrichment experiences. The students will each receive a $1,000 “Horizon Grant.” This unique grant is intended to help high school juniors broaden their academic horizons and explore areas of interest through summer workshops, classes, field studies, internships or conferences during the summer before their senior year. The Horizon Grants are the newest initiative by the Plainfield Foundation for Excellence, a private organization that supports District 202 schools, students and staff with grants, scholarships …

Eastside Shuffle Rescheduled for June 9 in Plainfield

Flooding prompted organizers to postpone the Plainfield East fundraiser.

Submitted by Plainfield School District 202: Plainfield East High School’s inaugural “Eastside Shuffle” 5K run and walk is now planned for Sunday, June 9, 2013 at Settlers' Park, 24401 W. Lockport St. in downtown Plainfield. The event was originally scheduled for April 21, but was canceled following the flooding rains that occurred the week before. Read: Bengal 5K Postponed After Flooding The special family-oriented event will benefit the PEHS Band Boosters and the PEHS Science Club. TheEastside Shuffle is open to participants of all ages. Board Names Principals for Two Plainfield Elementary Schools

Sandra Garner will take charge at Grand Prairie, while Tammy Sroczynski will become the leader at Freedom Elementary.

Article submitted by Plainfield School District 202: New principals will take the helm at Grand Prairie and Freedom elementary schools next school year. The District 202 Board of Education approved appointing Sandra Garner as the new principal at Grand Prairie Elementary, and Dr. Tammy Sroczynski will take over as principal at Freedom Elementary. “We are confident that Sandra and Tammy will do an excellent job continuing the fine work that has been done at these schools by their predecessors,” said Mark Heiss, director for elementary administration and personnel.  Garner, currently an assistant principal at Timber Ridge Middle School will replace Janan Szurek, who is taking a principal position in Indian Prairie School District 204 in …

Plainfield Schools Could Go to ‘Pay to Participate’ Policy

Board set to vote next month on policy that would bar students from activities, big events if fees are delinquent.

Should students pay to play? Plainfield school board members are scheduled to vote May 28 on a policy that would require District 202 students to pay all their fees in full or be current on fee payment plans to participate in athletics or certain important events. The proposal is aimed at getting families to make good on unpaid fees. When the proposal was first suggested in January, the district was already looking at more than $172,000 in unpaid athletic fees from the start of the 2012-13 school year, according to Assistant Superintendent for Business and Operations Angie Smith. Currently, the district can prohibit students with unpaid fees from graduation, eighth-grade promotion ceremonies and prom. The proposal would give the district …

Underpaid? Really? Go to http://www.familytaxpayers.org/ftf/ftf_salaries.php and search for Plainfield 202. Most of those teachers work a little over 9 months, get almost full paid benefits for 12, and pay very little into their pensions. So take the salary and add the perks and tell me they don;t do OK.   more ›
