The national election cycle has just ended. Inevitably, there is much change on the horizon for public education as the dust settles and the President and Congress look to the future. One of the most significant changes will be the transition next year to the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for learning. Illinois is one of more than 45 states that have adopted and will implement the new CCSS, which are national learning expectations that align with international learning standards. The new national CCSS will replace the current state learning standards. This will be the largest education reform to happen in decades. A look at how local servicemen and women are being recognized.
Thought it falls on a Sunday this year, Veterans Day will be observed across the nation on Monday, Nov. 12. In the days and weeks before and after the holiday, which recognizes serviceman and women for the sacrifices and service they've given to their country, Plainfield schools, churches and a local business are paying homage to local heroes. Here's a roundup of some Plainfield activities: In observance of Veterans Day, the following locations will be closed on Monday, Nov. 12: While many government offices are closed, the Plainfield Public Library will be open Veterans Day.

Editor's note: The following is a press release issued by Plainfield School District 202: District 202 third-graders now have an extra special view of their community’s history thanks to a unique partnership between the school district, its textbook publisher and the Plainfield Historical Society. The district’s new third grade social studies textbook, published by the Pearson company features an entire chapter about thehistory of Plainfield. Work started on the project about a year ago, said Joan Woolwine, District 202’s director for elementary and middle school curriculum and instruction. Program will allow students who receive free or reduced-price lunches to get breakfast, too.
Editor's note: The following is a press release issued by District 202: District 202 will serve breakfast through the national school lunch program at all of its elementary, middle and high schools by the end of the school year. The District 202 Board of Education approved the additional service at its October 22, 2012 regular meeting. The new program will start at Plainfield South on Nov. 1, and will not cost the district anything. Breakfast is already served ala carte at all four district high schools, said Angie Smith, assistant superintendent for business and operations. The online job application system used by District 202 was shut down after someone was able to log in to an employee's account.
After someone used an authorized username and password to log in to the online employment application system used by District 202 — and used that access to send a nasty email to an estimated 23,000 job applicants — officials say they don't believe any personal information was compromised. On Saturday, tens of thousasnds of people who had used the third-party website to apply for District 202 jobs received the message, which boasted that the system had been hacked. District 202 Community Relations Director Tom Hernandez on Tuesday said the district had learned that whoever accessed the job application system did so by using an employee's username and password taken from a list on one of the district's servers.
