Plainfield South's Efforts Come Up Short in Playoff Game with L-W East

L-W's top-seeded Griffins eliminate the Cougars 35-7.

Top-seeded Lincoln-Way East ended Plainfield South's 2011 season, handily beating the Cougars 35-7 on their Frankfort home turf and moving on to the second round of the Class 7A IHSA State Playoffs. L-W senior quarterback Blake Winkler spearheaded the Griffins’ (10-0) attack, completing 13 of 18 passes for 228 yards and three touchdowns. Senior wide receiver J.J. Robertson snagged four Winkler passes for 68 yards and two touchdowns, while senior wide-out Jay Yancy had seven receptions for 133 yards and a score. The Cougars (5-5) were led by inspired senior Dantrell Wright, who amassed 150 total yards, a receiving touchdown, and a 93-yard interception playing defensive back. Plainfield Teams, Individuals Advance to Next Week's Cross-Country Sectional

Saturday's regionals followed by the next challenge, the Oct. 29 sectional competition being held at Lockport's Dellwood Park.

A large contingent of Plainfield School District 202 teams and individuals earned spots in the Class 3A Lockport cross country sectional races after their performances at the Plainfield South regional Saturday in Channahon. Two girls and two boys teams advanced as well as 10 individuals to next Saturday’s races at Dellwood Park in Lockport. “Next week is going to be fun,” Plainfield South boys coach Jason Crowe said. “There are some great teams, some great competition and it’s a great course. It’s a cross country course. And, we qualified for the state meet there two years ago, so we’re looking forward to it.” Plainfield South team member Dan Lathrop concurred. “We’re looking to get a spot at state and if we run solid, we should make it,” …

Plainfield South Earns Revenge Over Plainfield North, Lands Playoff Spot

Cougars beat Tigers 27-7 thanks to Dantrell Wright's 16 carries for 174 yards and three TDs; no playoff berth for Plainfield North.

Paybacks aren’t pretty. Plainfield South High School earned vindication and a playoff spot by beating Plainfield North 27-7 during the regular-season finale for both teams Friday at South. A year ago, host Plainfield North beat Plainfield South to keep the Cougars from a 9-0 season and undefeated conference championship. This time around, the Cougars improved to 5-4 and put themselves in position to qualify for the state playoffs with 40 playoff points. Last year, the cutoff to qualify for the playoffs was 39 points, which was the highest total since the state went to eight classes. Playoff points equal opponents wins. Plainfield South, Victorious over East, One Game Away from a Playoff Berth

Plainfield South High School’s Austin Howarth and Joshua Harris ruined Plainfield East’s senior night Friday. Howarth enjoyed his best game under center and Harris burst onto the scene by scoring three second-half touchdowns during the Cougars’ 32-13 Southwest Prairie Conference victory. The victory puts Plainfield South a win away from state-playoff consideration. The Cougars host Plainfield North Friday. Both teams are 4-4 overall and 3-3 in the SPC. Volley for a Cure Fundraiser at Plainfield South Tonight

The game will hold special meaning for Plainfield South, whose girls volleyball coach is battling breast cancer.

The Volley for the Cure initiative is gaining momentum. That means more awareness and, ultimately, more funding to fight breast cancer. To that end, Plainfield South High School is hosting a Volley for the Cure game tonight in which it will face off against its Southwest Prairie Conference rival Plainfield North. The game will hold special meaning for the Cougars' girls volleyball team and their coach, Amy Larson, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. She is currently undergoing treatment for the disease, which is the second most common cancer among women, according to the American Cancer Society. Plainfield Central Marks 26-19 Win Over Plainfield South

Wildcats are a win away from playoff consideration

The fireworks show after the game paled in comparison to the Plainfield Central offense during Plainfield South’s homecoming Friday. The Wildcats scored two touchdowns within seven seconds in the first quarter en route to a 26-19 Southwest Prairie Conference win over the Cougars. Tim Blake threw for three touchdowns and Jordan Ellingwood struck pay dirt three times to put Plainfield Central (4-2, 2-2 in the SPC) a win away from playoff consideration. Three-time, all-Southwest Prairie Conference player setting sights on state

Plainfield South’s Matt Ward wasn’t satisfied with becoming the school’s first boys golf state qualifier a year ago. So, the three-time all-Southwest Prairie Conference player is aiming to win the first boys golf medal in District 202 history this year. He will get his chance during regional, sectional and state meets over the next two weeks. There wasn’t a celebration on the field or any street signs stolen on Ridge Road. Instead, there was a quiet confidence that came over Minooka High School after its 23-7 Southwest Prairie Conference win over Plainfield South on Friday in Minooka. It was the third installment of the Ridge Road Rivalry as both schools are located on the north-south, Kendall County thoroughfare. The teams split last year’s meetings, South winning the regular season game and Minooka returning the favor in the second round of the Class 7A playoffs. JOLIET — Plainfield South senior running back Dantrell Wright ran for a touchdown, made a touchdown reception and threw for a touchdown pass in the Cougars’ 34-14 victory over Romeoville on Friday night. For Plainfield South (3-1, 2-0), it was the third consecutive victory, and the second win in the Southwest Prairie Conference. Romeoville (1-3, 0-2) dropped its second straight contest in a game full of Spartan penalties. “They were the better team tonight,” Romeoville coach Jeff Kuna said. “They won offense, defense and special teams. The hitters are usually the ones who get the oohs and aahs during most girls volleyball matches. A booming kill usually get the attention of everybody in the gym. However, defense is the unsung hero in every match. Defense carried Oswego High School to a 25-19, 25-21 Southwest Prairie Conference win over Plainfield South on Thursday in Plainfield. The Panthers had 41 digs as a team and improved to 6-8 overall and 3-1 in the SPC. “Since we started playing conference matches, we’ve been doing pretty well,” Oswego coach Erica Lorenz said.
