Owner gets the nod to demolish 24025 W. Ottawa St.
Days are numbered for a home on Ottawa St. Village trustees on Monday approved demolition for a home in the Village Green neighborhood at 24025 W. Ottawa St. The home, built in 1830, will be torn down so the property owner can build a new home on the site. Village trustee Paul Fay said the house is in his own neighborhood and, after touring it recently with members of the village’s Historic Preservation Commission (HPC), he won’t be sorry to see it go. “The structural integrity is not worth saving,” Fay said. “It does not have [historic] value.” Fay said the owner plans to use some of the original timbers to build the new home. According to village planner Michael Garrigan, the majority of the HPC supports demolition of the home, and none …

Trustees approved drive-thrus at both brand-new businesses.
A new Plainfield Starbucks got one step closer to opening at Route 59 and Main Street Monday, as trustees approved a special use permit for a drive-thru at the location, 23915 W. Main St. The property, owned by developer Carl Bryant, was considered for a Dunkin’ Donuts franchise in 2012. Now, a Dunkin’ Donuts could be in the works for land at Chicago Street and Route 59 — if the developer can get the village trustees on board — while Starbucks is aiming to move into the Main Street property. The Starbucks, located next to Main Street Chiropractic, could open relatively soon, according to village planner Michael Garrigan. While he did not have a date for the coffee shop's opening, he said the project is on a "very fast pace." According to …

Trustees seek more information on Dunkin' Donuts proposal.
Plainfield Village Trustees are sold on burgers, but not so much on donuts. As a result of action by the village board Monday night, a McDonald’s restaurant will be coming to the southwest corner of Route 30 and 135th Street just south of Walgreen’s. Trustees approved a site plan and directed the village attorney to draft a special use ordinance to allow construction of the 4,374 square-foot restaurant with a drive-thru window. But is it time to make the donuts? Not quite yet, say board members, who are seeking more specifics before considering the concept of a stand-alone Dunkin' Donuts with a drive-thru as part of development of a parcel of land at Lockport Street and Route 59. The corner, which serves as a gateway to Plainfield’s …

The village board officially approved the events on Monday.
Two Plainfield summertime events got the nod on Monday. Both Cruise Nights and the Plainfield Farmers Market will return to downtown Plainfield this year. Cruise Nights will be back thanks to the Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce, which assumed responsibility for the event after previous organizer MainStreet Plainfield folded. The venue for classic car enthusiasts will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, June 4 to Sept. 3 along Lockport and DesPlaines streets. Meanwhile, the Plainfield Farmers Market is set to return to the southwest corner of Lockport Street and Route 59 on Saturdays from June 1 to Sept. 28. The weekly market will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will feature locally grown produce. Organizer Susan Bostanche, owner of…

Chicago Brew Werks already operates a retail shop for at-home beer brewers, but is getting ready to move to a larger space where owner Brandon Wright can create “nanobrew” beers.
A Plainfield retailer catering to homebrew enthusiasts is getting ready to expand. For the past year, Chicago Brew Werks has operated out of a 1,500-square-foot storefront at 12249 Rhea Dr., located behind Binny’s Beverage Depot. “We sell grain, hops, yeast, equipment — everything people use for brewing [beer] at home,” owner Brandon Wright said. On Monday night, the Plainfield Village Board signed off on a special use permit that could pave the way for Brew Werks to move into its new home at 14903 S. Center St. by mid-April, Wright said. The 4,000-square-foot space will give Brew Werks a larger retail space that will also double as a tasting room once the business becomes licensed to brew its own beers on site. “We’re what’s considered …

The Carey family hopes they’ll have better luck selling their property without the home, which has fallen into disrepair.
Now that the Route 59 “Vision for Division” study is finished, Thomas Carey hoped to have his answer on Monday night. He got it when Mayor Mike Collins broke the village board’s tie, voting to allow his family to tear down their aging home at 14927 S. Division St. (Route 59). Carey said his mother, now age 91 and in poor health, has long been trying to sell the property. The family hopes that by demolishing the structurally unsound home, they’ll have better luck attracting a buyer. “This has been a burden for her for a long time,” Carey said, summing up his reaction to Collins’ decision in one word: “Relieved.” Opinion was split on the board of trustees, with Margie Bonuchi, Garrett Peck and Bill Lamb voting against demolition and Jim …

Village officials took another look at a request to raze a Route 59 home, but ultimately stuck with their decision to delay the project until the completion of visioning study.
Village officials on Monday made good on a promise to revisit a proposal to demolish a more than century-old Route 59 house — but the outcome was the same for the owner. In August, trustees voted to deny a request to raze the house at 14927 S. Route 59, known as the Carey house, until the village’s Route 59 Visioning study (Vision for Division) is completed. During Monday night’s Committee of the Whole workshop, the consensus of trustees was the same: to wait and see what the study says. Speaking on behalf of his mother, who purchased the home in 1952 with her late husband, Thomas Carey expressed frustration over the continued delay. Last week, Carey asked the village board to reconsider his mother’s request, saying the family would have …

Developer Michael P. Guinta ended his candidacy Thursday. He and two other village candidates faced battles to stay on the ballot.
The Plainfield village trustee race just got a little less crowded. This week, local developer Michael Guinta withdrew his candidacy in the April 9 election. That leaves four candidates to vie for the three open seats. Remaining in the race are incumbents Margie Bonuchi, Jim Racich and Garrett Peck, plus Naperville firefighter and Wheatland Township Plan Commission chairman Mark Chmura. Guinta’s withdrawal comes after a Plainfield resident challenged his candidacy, claiming the wrong date appeared on several pages of Guinta’s nominating petitions and questioning the validity of numerous signatures. Sign up for the Plainfield Patch newsletter. The objection, filed Jan. 3 by Jeffrey Schmitt, claimed Guinta did not have enough valid …

Yes, this is the former Sam and Clara Macaluso house. But, for the record, the house was not built in 1830 as staff reports have stated; no house in the village has been authenticated prior to 1833-34. Likely, this house dates to 1840-43 and is a second building on the property. Apparently, the stone cellar was much smaller at one time and expanded for the existing home to be built. Unfortunately…   more ›
