Bleak School Budget; Tough Decisions Ahead

While almost every category of District 202 spending is expected to go up, revenue sources are in a decline, documents show.

A still-weak economy, reduced and erratic payments by the state, a decrease in property values and new construction, and rising expenses have all contributed to Plainfield School District 202’s dismal 2011-12 budget, officials said Monday. Current projections call for an operating deficit of $5.8 million, with the bulk of the shortfall -- $5.48 million -- in the education fund. Operating costs, which are the combination of six funds used to pay daily expenses, show total revenues at about $243.8 million and total expenditures at about $249.6 million. I am a Plainfield teacher, I pay 9.1% of my salary to TRS, the teacher's retirement system, from every paycheck.
