Oswego may have won SPC wrestling series 50-21, the Cougars start season 3-0.
Although Oswego High School came away with a 50-21 Southwest Prairie Conference wrestling victory over Plainfield South Thursday in Oswego, the Cougars started the season 3-0 for the first time in school history. “I can’t be mad at any of my guys,” Plainfield South coach Jason Acevedo said. “We’ve shown a lot of experience and maturity so far this year. I’m proud of every one of these guys up and down the lineup. We’ve never been 3-0 before.” Plainfield South beat Plano 39-33, Mendota 73-6 and Elgin St. Edward via forfeit before beginning league dual action Thursday at Oswego. Just five matches went the distance. Of those, Oswego won just two of them. “There were overtimes, matches that went both ways, so the score was not indicative of …

Wildcats fall 5-4 in overtime in regional championship soccer game.
Plainfield Central High School figured destiny was on its side during the final minutes of regulation and in overtime during the Class 3A Plainfield North regional boys soccer championship game against Aurora East Friday in Plainfield. Plainfield Central tied the game in the final seconds and Aurora East missed a penalty kick during the first overtime. However, the Wildcats’ luck ran out shortly thereafter when Aurora East’s Juan Bustamante scored with 42.2 seconds left in the first overtime to give the No. 4 Tomcats a 5-4 victory over No. 12 Plainfield Central. It was the eighth time the Wildcats fell in their quest to win the program’s first regional championship. Aurora East (15-4-4), which is ranked No. 4 in the Chicagoland area by www…

All of Plainfield's high schools managed to make their mark in the Southwest Prairie Conference event.
All four Plainfield School District 202 boys and girls prep teams took away something from the Southwest Prairie Conference cross country meet Saturday in Oswego. It was a learning experience for the Plainfield South boys and a coming out race for the Plainfield Central girls. The Cougars took second to six-time championship Minooka, 42-53, in the boys race. The Wildcat girls took third place, their highest placing in a conference meet since 2006. “Our hat’s off to Minooka and its program,” Plainfield South boys coach Jason Crowe said. “They are raising the standard in the conference every year and that’s a good thing. Plainfield East did great today, so it’s great to see this conference becoming more and more competiive.” Upstart …
Big night for South's Howarth and Harris, whose passing and rushing games led to a 32-13 win.
Plainfield South High School’s Austin Howarth and Joshua Harris ruined Plainfield East’s senior night Friday. Howarth enjoyed his best game under center and Harris burst onto the scene by scoring three second-half touchdowns during the Cougars’ 32-13 Southwest Prairie Conference victory. The victory puts Plainfield South a win away from state-playoff consideration. The Cougars host Plainfield North Friday. Both teams are 4-4 overall and 3-3 in the SPC. Plainfield East dropped to 2-6, 2-4. “We got some really important contribution from all phases,” Plainfield South coach Ken Bublitz said. “I’m real glad for the kids that they have a chance to get in with a win next week.” Howarth missed just two passes in the second half and finished the …

East profited off seven turnovers to put 31 points on the scoreboard, key to the team's victory over last year's conference tri-champion.
A David and Goliath story, of sorts, played out Friday night during the Southwest Prairie Conference opener for Plainfield East and Plainfield North at East. Plainfield East, last year’s league doormat, took advantage of seven turnovers and scored 31 straight points to stun 2010 conference tri-champion Plainfield North 38-12. It’s the first win over a District 202 school and the first against a school with a .500 or better record. It puts Plainfield East at 1-2 overall, and 1-0 and tied for first place in the SPC. Plainfield North fell to 1-2, 0-1. Plainfield East, Minooka, Plainfield South and Oswego are tied for first with 1-0 records. “Every one doubted us when we were 0-2, but these guys are special,” Plainfield East coach Mike Romeli …

Indians hold off Plainfield Central 25-17, 25-18
Minooka High School's girls volleyball team could have been a little disinterested Thursday a day after an emotional, three-set loss to mighty Joliet Catholic. However, the Indians had other things on their mind, including a successful defense of their Southwest Prairie Conference championship. The Indians started their title defense with a solid, 25-17, 25-18 league victory at Plainfield Central. The play of outside hitters, senior Stacey Perinar and sophomore Skyler Day, and a host of Wildcats errors paved the way for Minooka’s 37th league win over the last three seasons. Perinar (11 kills) and Day (seven) combined for 18 kills. “We missed a lot of serves yesterday,” Perinar said. “Today, we needed to work on a few things and improve …

Plainfield South team holds off challenges from Minooka and Plainfield North.
The Southwest Prairie Conference boys track and field championship will remain in Plainfield. Plainfield South held off Minooka to win its third straight conference title Thursday at Plainfield East. The Cougars achieved its victory with 143 points to Minooka's 121 and Plainfield North's 105. “It’s really awesome to win three in a row, especially in this conference,” Plainfield South coach Jason Crowe said. “This conference has really stepped up the competition and it’s an honor to win it again.” Plainfield Central and Plainfield North won the first two SPC championships. Plainfield South was led by a group of seniors who have rewritten the program’s team and individual marks. “This is great for the senior class because these guys have …

Plainfield North's Cessily Jones and Plainfield South's Erin Fitzgerald were multiple-event champions
All four Plainfield high schools showed their mettle by bringing home plenty of medals from the Southwest Prairie Conference girls track and field meet Thursday at Oswego East. Unfortunately, none of the four District 202 schools were lucky enough to come away with the conference championship. Minooka wrestled the title plaque away from three-time defending champion Plainfield North by scoring 108 points. Oswego East was second with 88 points. Plainfield North came in third (86). Oswego (72), Plainfield South (70), Romeoville (60), Plainfield Central (52.5) and Plainfield East (21.5) rounded out the eight-team field. The Minooka Indians won the first and last races of the night and featured plenty of career performances in between to win …

Cougars' comeback falls short in 41-34 loss to Bloom.
Plainfield South High School followed a disturbing trend in its Class 4A regional semifinal boys basketball game against Chicago Heights' Bloom High School Tuesday. The Cougars fell behind early and never quite recovered in a 41-34 setback to the Trojans. No. 5 Bloom (16-11) faces No. 2 Crete-Monee (22-3) at 7:30 p.m. Friday for the regional plaque. Crete-Monee beat Blue Island's Eisenhower 107-65 in the other regional semifinal. No. 10 Plainfield South ended its best season to date at 20-7 and as the Southwest Prairie Conference champion. “This was a fantastic year from these guys,” Plainfield South coach Ken Bublitz said. “More importantly, they were a great group of kids who represented the school real well all year. Tonight was no …

Panthers go 13-for-13 from the line in the fourth quarter while knocking off the more experienced Tigers, 59-56.
At this point in the season, it might be time to stop talking about how young Oswego’s boys basketball team is. Still, you can’t help but think some of their players really grew up Friday night. In a wild back-and-forth battle with visiting Plainfield North — and with first place in the Southwest Prairie Conference on the line — every possession down the stretch was critical. And even as the more experienced Tigers led 39-36 after three quarters and also held a 49-45 lead with just more than three minutes to play, the Panthers pulled out a huge 59-56 victory in large part because of the stellar play of three sophomores. Oswego (10-4, 4-1) went 13-for-13 from the free-throw line, with sophomore Elliot McGaughy going 9-for-9 and fellow …
