Thanksgiving Day is upon us. What is your favorite food on the dinner table?
Thanksgiving Day has been celebrated for centuries here in America. The holiday dates back to 1621 when the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared a harvest feast that has long been acknowledged as the first Thanksgiving. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln declared a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November. The first Thanksgiving meal included wild turkey, waterfowl, venison, fish, lobster, clams, berries, fruit, pumpkin and squash. Some of those foods continue to be Thanksgiving staples, but over time, the meal has evolved. So tell us, Patch readers, what is your favorite part of Thanksgiving dinner? Cast your vote in the poll below!

It's Thanksgiving — you know what that means: Time to take stock of the good things in your life.
It's here: That special day when most people gather around the table with loved ones to enjoy a feast and give thanks for the year that was. Truth be told, times are still tough for a lot of people. The economy is still shaky, and a lot of people are struggling to make ends meet (including some of us lucky enough to be employed). But Plainfield clearly still has plenty of reasons to give thanks; here's what some of you had to say on the Plainfield Patch Facebook page: Stacey S. Health, a roof over my head, food in fridge, $ in pocket, friends, family, faith, sunshine, my 2 cats......I could go on. Barb B. The fire we survived. We may have lost everything but we have each other. Rochelle H. Everything I hace ever experienced. From …

Wow; do you believe it? Your Thanksgiving football could be shirts-and-skins as temperatures will remain remarkably warm throughout this week.
Call it global warming, call it coincidence, but even as we march towards the end of November—a time for snow, some might say!—we are instead seeing temperatures that look more like outdoor-sports weather. If your Thanksgiving Day plans involve football in a Plainfield park, you will likely be enjoying some quite warm weather for the season; don't wear more than a T-shirt. And in general, keep the heavy clothing packed away ... at least until Friday night (projected at below freezing.) Thursday's forecast calls for a partly sunny, breezy day with winds of up to 20 mph, plus a high of 61 degrees during the day. But by Thanksgiving night, temperatures are expected to plunge into the 30s, with a low of 37 degrees. By Friday, the warmest it's…

Amanda Burke, 15, won a spot on the All-American Dance Team.
Unlike most of Plainfield, one District 202 teen won’t be spending this Thanksgiving at home with her family. Instead, Plainfield East sophomore Amanda Burke will be enjoying the limelight as a performer in the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade. The 15-year-old won a spot on the All-American Dance Team at the National Dance Alliance summer camp last June at Valparaiso University. Amanda was at the camp with her dance team, the Romeoville Razzlers, when she got the chance to audition for the All-American Dancer designation. She admitted auditioning was a bit of a nerve-wracking experience. “You only have two days to learn the routine, and then you perform it the last day of camp,” Amanda explained. “I was so nervous I almost didn’t want …

Drivers advised to buckle up, watch their drinking over the holiday.
Editor's note: The following is from press releases issued by the Plainfield Police Department and Will County Sheriff's Department: Thanksgiving can be a dangerous time for motorists, especially unbelted ones — during the day or at night. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the Plainfield police are reminding everyone who will be out on the roadways this holiday season to drive carefully and defensively, do not drive impaired and, most importantly, buckle up. To lose a loved one is a terrible thing to experience, especially during the holidays. But to lose one’s life, when it might have been saved by taking two seconds to buckle a seat belt, is truly senseless, Plainfield Traffic Sgt. Eric Munson said in a press release…
