Plans for Plainfield Recycling Center Move Forward

Vintage Tech is converting the former Fox Valley Press building into a 160,000-square-foot recycling facility.

A former newspaper printing facility get new life as the North American headquarters of one of the largest electronics recycling companies in the world. Village trustees on Monday approved changes to the site plan for a new Vintage Tech Recyclers facility in the former Fox Valley Press building at Route 30 and 135th Street. The board also voted to direct the village attorney to draft an ordinance for the property, located at 13543 S. Route 30. I am thrilled to learn we are recycling a facility for recycling. We live in an area of Plainfield that doesn't have recycling pick-ups. I haul cans and bottles to school, computers and batteries to Shorewood, and my borhter-in-laws hauls papers to wherever he can. It will be nice to have a local place to take everything. At least I hope they will take everything.   more ›

Tax Break Could Bring Electronics Recycling Headquarters to Plainfield

Village officials signed off on a 50 percent tax abatement on a project that would unite a local business with one of the world's largest recycling companies.

Officials are hoping to keep one of the world’s largest recycling companies in Plainfield by offering a tax abatement on a planned $5.7 million expansion project. Planner Michael Garrigan said a local business, Vintage Tech Recylers — which got its start in Plainfield — is partnering with Finnish recycling company Kuusakoski to convert the former Fox Valley Press building into a state-of-the-art electronics recycling plant. The international company has plans to purchase the building, which has been vacant for more than three years, and spend $5,750,800 to convert the former newspaper printing facility into its new North American headquarters, Garrigan said. The land purchase and improvements represent an estimated $12.2 million investment…

Are they really going to be able to receive grants to recycle electronics? GoodWill is already up and running doing the same service with grant money. What does this facility do that the nationwide chain of stores can't? Curious.....   more ›

Electronics Dumping Ban Starts Jan. 1, but Fear Not

Two nearby options -- including one that will pickup items from your home -- will make it easy for you to do the right thing.

Tempted to throw that old TV or cordless phone in the trash? You'll need to think again come Jan. 1. That's the state's new Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act kicks in, mandating that all electronic goods be recycled and making it against the law for items to be placed in garbage landfills, according to a media release from the village of Plainfield. What does that include? Televisions, monitors, printers, computers, keyboards, fax machines, DVD players, VCRs, video game consoles, portable digital music players, scanners, and cable/satellite receivers. County Offering Pick-up Service for Old Electronics

Items such as computers, televisions, printers, video game consoles and microwaves will be accepted.

Electronic Recycling Pickup Service for Will County Residents Speaking of recycling, The Will County Land Use Department has partnered with Vintage Tech Recyclers to offer free pickup service for electronic recyclables.  The program is the first such service in Illinois.
