Submitted by the Greater Joliet Area YMCA: Area kids looking to learn basic swimming and water safety skills are invited to participate in the Greater Joliet Area YMCA’s SPLASH Program during the week of May 28, at its C.W. Avery and Smith Family YMCA locations. Registration is underway online via the Y’s Web site, www.jolietymca.org. Designed to teach kids lifesaving water safety skills, participants will learn basic swimming skills and practice water safety habits while in and around the pool. This unique program will run daily at both YMCA locations, and is open to both Y members and non-members. C.W. Editor's note: The following is a press release issued by the YMCA: Plainfield resident Mihireti Weyland was chosen as one of three winners in the Greater Joliet Area YMCA’s first-ever Holiday Card Design Contest. Mihireti’s colorful artwork will be one of three original designs featured on the Y’s 2012 holiday cards. A member of the C.W. Avery Family YMCA and a student at Walker’s Grove Elementary School, 8-year-old Mihireti is truly a talented Y kid!

Blowing snow and dangerously cold temps prompt the decision, officials say.
School is canceled on Thursday, Plainfield School District 202 officials have announced. Citing the blowing and drifting snow and dangerously cold temperatures, a decision was made at 9:30 a.m. today to keep the schools closed another day and to cancel all activities involving students, staff, parents and community members, said district spokesman Tom Hernandez in a new release. No decision on whether school will be canceled on Friday will be made until Thursday, he said. The district urged parents with children in the YMCA's Kidz Zone to check the agency's Web site, www.jolietymca.org, to get information on the status of that program.
