A Town Called Plainfield

Lambert: Old School Built as a Radio Station

The building that last housed Christ Lutheran Academy originally had been designed for radio broadcasts and later became a rural apartment complex.

The Inquiry Plainfield Patch reader Brian asked about the history of the soon-to-be-demolished former Christ Lutheran Academy building on 127th Street, between Route 59 and Naperville-Plainfield Road. Construction of a 340-unit apartment development began on the property Tuesday. The site is tied to three pioneering events that played a role in the 19th Century settlement of Wheatland Township and the nationwide development of technology in the 20th Century. This is the second in a two-part series. To read part one, click here. The Facts Settled by the Robins family in 1843, the site of the now-empty school building is one of the early pioneer farmsteads of Wheatland Township. In 1910, the farm was sold to the Jesse Thompson family.  The …

Construction to Begin on Plainfield Apartment Complex

The first tenants will be able to move in by January or February 2013, according to the developer.

It will be about a year and a half before all 17 buildings at the Springs at 127th apartment complex are completed, but tenants can begin moving into the 340-unit development sooner than that. Kimberly Grimm, vice president of development for developer Continental Properties, said the first building is scheduled to be completed in early 2013. The property is located at 23756 127th St., east of Route 59.  “We’ll be turning over the buildings as they’re done,” Grimm said. In the meantime, the existing building on the property, last occupied by Christ Lutheran Academy, has a date with the wrecking ball. Jeremy Droeszler, project manager with contractor Horizon, said demolition could happen as soon as next week. Mayor Mike Collins, village …

I recently moved to Plainfield from Lockport... our taxes were almost DOUBLE in Lockport for 1/8 of the businesses & things to do that Plainfield has. I cant believe this many people can complain about a town that has stores, resturaunts, nice roads, a nice downtown & actual things to do. I dont see how one apartment complex could bring "trouble" to an area or overcrowd a school. Alot of people …   more ›

A Town Called Plainfield

Lambert: Old School Site Tied to Village History

As developers get ready to break ground on a new 340-unit apartment complex, we explore why the building on 127th Street, east of Route 59, is significant.

The Inquiry Plainfield Patch reader Brian asked about the history of the soon-to-be-demolished former Christ Lutheran Academy building on 127th Street between Route 59 and Naperville-Plainfield Road, just east of the Walmart plaza. Construction begins Tuesday on a 340-unit apartment complex. Brian wondered if the doomed building had been built as a local high school at one time. In fact, the site of the structure is tied to three pioneering events that not only shaped the local rural neighborhood, but played a role in the development of national advances in technology. In the first of a two-part series, we set the stage. The Facts The first settlement of Wheatland Township occurred nearly a decade after the pioneer settlement at Plainfield…

Full Speed Ahead for New Apartment Development

On Monday night, the Plainfield Village Board and Plainfield School District 202 board OK'd a half dozen agreements that will allow the development to move forward.

It was smooth sailing Monday night for the 340-unit Springs at 127th apartment complex, which won Plainfield Village Board approval and land value concessions from the Plainfield School District 202 board. With almost no discussion, the village board signed off on a list of agreements for the project, including annexation, rezoning, a special use permit and preliminary plat approval for the 27-acre development proposed for 23823 W. 127th St., east of Route 59. Only Trustee Garrett Peck voted against the project, which is being built by Continental Properties Co. of Menomenee Falls, Wis. Objections raised by neighboring residents were resolved with a stipulation that the developer will create a landscaping/fence border to act as a buffer …

Old High School Site Proposed for 340-Unit Apartment Complex

The village board will review annexation and rezoning for the 127th Street project tonight.

The site of a former Lutheran high school on 127th Street will be transformed into a 17-building apartment complex under plans pending before the Plainfield Village Board tonight. Continental Properties Co., of Menomonee Falls, Wis., has proposed the project, which calls for 340 apartment units and a clubhouse on 27 acres at 23756 127th St., east of Route 59. The first steps are to annex and rezone the site from agricultural to R-4 residential, which the board will review at tonight’s meeting. A site plan and preliminary plat are slated to go before the Plainfield Plan Commission Tuesday night. The initial plans have the endorsement of village staff and the plan commission, which found the location appropriate for higher-density …
