Plainfield Shoppers -- Watch Out for Added Credit Card 'Checkout Fee'
If you shop with a credit card, merchants and retailers can now charge you a 4 percent "checkout" fee in 40 states, including Illinois.
Plainfield shoppers, beware: As of Sunday, anyone who pays with a credit card may be charged a new 4 percent added "checkout fee." The fee is legal in 40 states, including Illinois. The fee is the result of a settlement between announced last summer between credit card companies and major banks to "fix credit card processing fees with merchants." Retailers can now charge credit card users 1.5 percent to 4 percent of their total bill to cover processing costs to credit card companies. @Gina while I agree with your sentiments, we cannot directly impact the banks, only the business owners. Is it unfair, you bet it is, but unless you can afford to use cash and not use plastic, or cancel your credit card entirely, it will fall on small business to absorb these extra charges.
