Judge Rejects Joliet Diocese Birth Control Suit

The diocese, joined by Catholic Charities and the Springfield diocese, wanted to be exempt from a mandate that it must provide employee insurance that funds birth control and sterilization.

A lawsuit seeking to exempt the Catholic Diocese of Joliet and others from having to comply with a federal law mandating that its employee health insurance cover contraception and sterilization costs has been rejected by a federal judge. The diocese, which was joined in the suit by the Diocese of Springfield and Catholic Charities in Chicago, Joliet and Springfield, argued that the mandate violated the organizations' 1st Amendment rights guaranteeing religious freedom. According to a story published by the Catholic Conference of Illlinois, U.S. Judge John Darrow's ruling rejected the organizations' arguments. Benedict First Pope in 600 Years to Resign; Joliet Diocese Reacts

The last pope to step down was Gregory XII in 1415, who did so to end a civil war within the church.

Some Catholics reacted with shock Monday as Pope Benedict XVI announced his plans to resign on Feb. 28, 2013. The resignation comes during Lent, a time of penance and the liturgical season leading up to Christianity’s most important holiday, Easter. Former Plainfield Vicar Named Administrator of the Diocese of Joliet

Bishop Joseph M. Siegel will serve as the diocese's caretaker until a replacement for Bishop J. Peter Sartain can be named.

Bishop Joseph M. Siegel, who once served as a parochial vicar for St. Mary Immaculate Parish in Plainfield, has been named administrator for the Diocese of Joliet. He will assume many of the powers and obligations previously handled by Bishop J. Peter Sartain, who headed the Joliet diocese for four years until his appointment as archbishop for the Archdiocese of Seattle, according to a Diocese of Joliet release. Sartain was installed in that new position on Dec. 1. Siegel, 47,  was elected by the College of Consultors on Dec. 3. Under church law, the college must convene within eight days after a diocese loses its bishop through death, resignation or transfer, the release said.
