Obama Endorses Foster for Congress

The president also gave the nod to fellow Democrats Tammy Duckworth and Brad Schneider.

Judy Biggert has Giuliani; Bill Foster has Obama. On Friday, President Barack Obama endorsed scientist Foster, a Democrat hoping to unseat incumbent Biggert in the race to represent the new 11th Congressional District. Foster, who represented the 14th District from 2008 to 2010, was one of three Illinois Democrats to get the nod from the president. In a statement released Friday, Obama also endorsed Tammy Duckworth, a decorated Iraq War veteran running in the 8th Congressional District, and Brad Schneider, who is running against Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) in the 10th District. Along with Biggert, Dold got some big-name backing last month from former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who appeared at a Chicago fundraiser for the …

CLTV Host Confronts Foster Over Endorsements

11th District candidate reportedly changed website after interview with "Politics Tonight" host Paul Lisnek.

Democrat Bill Foster has taken some heat from Republicans in his bid to unseat seven-term Congresswoman Judy Biggert, but earlier this week, he faced criticism from a TV newsman who accused him of attempting to mislead voters. WATCH: CLTV Host Confronts Foster In a televised face-to-face interview with the former congressman turned candidate, CLTV "Politics Tonight" host Paul Lisnek asked Foster about some of the endorsements listed on his campaign website, including reported nods from the Chicago Tribune, Kane County Chronicle and Daily Herald — all of which have endorsed Biggert. Poll: Foster and Biggert Neck and Neck

A week before the election, poll shows less than a point difference between the 11th Congressional District rivals.

A new poll shows Democratic challenger Bill Foster leading incumbent Judy Biggert by less than 1 point in their battle to represent the new 11th District. Professional polling firm We Ask America released the results of an automated Oct. 28 poll showing former 14th District Congressman Foster leading the seven-term Republican 50.4 percent to 49.6 percent. According to the poll, which sampled more than 1,300 likely voters, the candidates were tied among women, while Foster had a slight — as in 2-point — lead among male voters.  The race between Biggert and Foster has been a contentious one, with the two accusing each other of negative campaigning and Foster taking aim at Biggert over a controversial ad released by the National Republican …

On the Ballot: Voters to Decide on Illinois Pension Amendment

A long-winded explanation for an even longer constitutional amendment is confusing some early voters, officials say, but the ballot measure boils down to a change in the way pension benefits can be increased.

You might be in for a surprise when you head to the polls on Nov. 6 if you haven’t taken a look at a sample ballot (you can see one here by entering your address and clicking "view sample ballot") or perused the 2012 Voter Information Guide you got in the mail from the Will County Clerk’s office. Plainfield Village Clerk Michelle Gibas said quite a few of the 1,623 (as of Tuesday morning) early voters at Village Hall weren’t aware of that they’d be asked to vote on an amendment to the Illinois State Constitution until they saw their ballots. The state proposition has created some confusion in the voting booths, she said. So what’s on the ballot? The proposition seeks voter approval to amend the 1970 Illinois Constitution to require a three…

Early Voting in Full Swing in Plainfield

More than 1,700 voters have cast ballots at Village Hall, Plainfield Township. Early voting ends Nov. 3.

More than 5 percent of Will County’s registered voters have already cast their ballots in the Nov. 6 election. As of Monday night, a total of 20,576 people had voted, including more than 18,000 early voters. In Plainfield, more than 1,600 early bird voters had done their civic duty at Village Hall, along with 91 people who voted at the Plainfield Township building, according to the Will County Clerk’s office. Early voting was also in full swing in Kendall County, where roughly 15 percent of registered voters had cast their ballots as of Tuesday. In Illinois, early voting started Oct. 22 and ends Nov. 3. Village Hall will serve early voters from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Friday. Ballots are also available from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday …

Letter: Plainfield Democrats Support Clean Politics

Send letters to the editor to shannon.antinori@patch.com.

The Plainfield Township Democratic Organization, which I am proud to be a Precinct Committeeman and the Plainfield Township Democratic Chairman, have fully realized and have a standing policy toward the process of clean campaigning. Many of our Candidates have experienced the loss of signs costing them huge amounts of hard earned campaign funds. Many of our supporters, businesses and homeowners, have unfortunately experienced candidate signs removed from locations by persons or persons who feel this is how to campaign. The Plainfield Township Democratic Organization Precinct Committeepersons, Candidates and supporters fully understand and endorse the democratic process and engaging the voters of Plainfield Township. It is unfortunate, in …

Proof? All the republican signs are gone and the opponents are still up? Very suspicious don't you think? Ballsy enough to leave a calling card on my driveway too - all the republican signs they pulled and the opponents sign on top of the pile. Even my daughters know this behavior is wrong, out of the mouth of babes - what are we FIVE! Grow up, I do not think out of sight out of mind will work. …   more ›

Candidates Share Positions at Forum for Immigrant Community

Political contenders for the 11th District U.S. House, 49th District Illinois House and Will County state's attorney positions attended the event at Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Driver's licenses for undocumented immigrant residents, a proposed deportation center for illegal immigrants and the need for warehouse jobs that pay a living wage were the hot-button issues discussed at a candidate's forum Monday night. The event, specifically designed to cover topics of interest to the Will County Latino community, was held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Joliet. Among the candidates to attend were those running for the Will County state's attorney's office, the U.S. House seat for District 11 and the Illinois House District 86 seat. Both Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow and his opponent Dave Carlson told attendees the Hispanic community is important to them. "I'm doing everything that I can to make sure …

Biggert, Foster Talk Gay Marriage, Tax Cuts at Final Debate

Candidates spar during live event on WTTW.

It’s a question many voters have for candidates: Are you for or against gay marriage? On Wednesday night, Republican Congresswoman Judy Biggert and Democratic challenger Bill Foster took on the issue during their final debate as they battle to represent the new 11th Congressional District. The candidate forum aired live on WTTW-Channel 11’s “Chicago Tonight.” After Biggert made the ambiguous statement “I’m close to reaching for gay marriages,” Foster went on the offensive. “She has not yet evolved. So, she's crawling out of the swamp or something,” said Foster, a scientist, according to the Chicago Tribune. “She has not yet evolved. So, she's crawling out of the swamp or something,” he added, noting he supports marriage equality. Biggert …

GOP Candidates Talk Taxes in Plainfield

Republicans warn of “January surprise” if Gov. Pat Quinn pushes his pension cost shift plan through.

Republican candidates staged a press conference in Plainfield Thursday afternoon to voice their opposition to property tax increases and a plan by Gov. Pat Quinn to shift teacher pension costs to local school districts. State Sen. Republican Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont) and House Republican Leader Tom Cross (R-Oswego) joined candidates Garrett Peck and Bob Kalnicky at the Plainfield home of Vicki and Ernie Knight. In a press release, the candidates said Quinn’s proposal will mean higher local property taxes by shifting the state’s estimated $44 billion teachers pension burden onto school districts. “Everyone has begun to recognize — finally — that Illinois has the worst-funded pension retirement system in the country and a …
