Peck Wants to ID 'Anonymous Cyberbullies'
Village trustee says Plainfield Patch commenters derailed his Senate campaign.
Village trustee says Plainfield Patch commenters derailed his Senate campaign.
Garrett Peck filed a petition for discovery seeking the account information and IP addresses for Plainfield Patch users, saying they hurt his election prospects.
Plainfield village trustee Garrett Peck wants to identify anonymous online commenters, saying they posted false information that hurt his bid to become an Illinois state senator. Peck, who was defeated in November 2012 by Democrat Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant for the 49th District seat, said he wants to uncover the commenters' identities, including a Plainfield Patch user, so he can potentially sue for damages. In a petition for discovery filed Tuesday in Cook County Circuit Court, Peck is asking Plainfield Patch and Topix, a local online discussion board, to provide information about several commenters. He claims they are responsible for derailing his campaign. The petition asks Patch to turn over the users' account information and IP …

Who's picked up petition forms so far? As of late Wednesday, four new contenders had indicated they may throw their hats into the ring, creating the potential for a six-way race for three spots on the village board.
Next spring’s village board race could get interesting. As of Wednesday night, a total of six Plainfield residents had picked up nominating petition forms for the nonpartisan April 2013 trustee race, according to village clerk Michelle Gibas. So far, only incumbent Village President Mike Collins has taken out petitions for the mayoral race. Incumbent trustees Margie Bonuchi and Jim Racich picked up petition forms early on in the nominating period. READ: Incumbents Take Out Petitions for Mayor, Village Board But in recent weeks, four more possible contenders have followed suit. Current Plainfield Plan Commissioner Ed O’Rourke and Naperville firefighter Mark A. Chmura have also taken out petitions, along with Walker’s Grove Homeowners …

Republicans warn of “January surprise” if Gov. Pat Quinn pushes his pension cost shift plan through.
Republican candidates staged a press conference in Plainfield Thursday afternoon to voice their opposition to property tax increases and a plan by Gov. Pat Quinn to shift teacher pension costs to local school districts. State Sen. Republican Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont) and House Republican Leader Tom Cross (R-Oswego) joined candidates Garrett Peck and Bob Kalnicky at the Plainfield home of Vicki and Ernie Knight. In a press release, the candidates said Quinn’s proposal will mean higher local property taxes by shifting the state’s estimated $44 billion teachers pension burden onto school districts. “Everyone has begun to recognize — finally — that Illinois has the worst-funded pension retirement system in the country and a …

Reader Marie Henderson is impressed by both Republican and Democratic legislator candidates.
Dear Editor; I attended the candidate’s forum at Carrillon Lakes on Tuesday night and I thought I would share my opinions your readers. State representative candidate Natalie Manley, a Democrat who's running in the 98th District, does not impress me and is part of everything that is wrong with our formerly great state. She has taken over $300,000 from (Speaker of the House) Mike Madigan; this she doesn’t deny. What she does do is try to hide the truth. She makes the claim that she is receiving money from her state party, what she doesn’t say is that Mike Madigan runs the state party and sends his money to her. Miss Manley was also very deceiving on her arrest from earlier this year. She was arrested for beating her daughter. It doesn’t …

We have received many mail pieces supporting Manley, paid for by the IL Democratic Party (shown in the return address). The pieces are extremely deceptive, claiming she will "stop the spending" and reform what "the politicians" in Springfield are doing. "The Springfield Politicians" are the very ones paying for the mailings, claiming she will fight THEM. Wake up residents! If Manley is elected, …   more ›
So far, two trustees and current Mayor Mike Collins have picked up nominating petitions at Village Hall.
As of Thursday afternoon, current Village of Plainfield trustees Margie Bonuchi and Jim Racich and Mayor Mike Collins were the only candidates to pick up nominating petitions at Village Hall for the April 9, 2013 consolidated election. Trustee Garrett Peck, whose term also expires next spring, had not picked up a packet as of Thursday, according to Village Clerk Michelle Gibas. While the village board race is nonpartisan, Republican Peck is running against Democrat Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant to represent the new 49th District in the State Senate in the Nov. 6 election. Gibas noted that while only the three incumbents have taken out petitions at Village Hall, that's not the only way a candidate can obtain nominating petition forms. The …

Reader has questions for State Senate candidate.
Recently the Patch came out with some good general election coverage and information for the voters to review on September 6th. Now that the ballots are out, I think people would like to read and hear more about the candidate’s positions on issues affecting all of the people they want to represent. Additionally, the questions asked are issues directly affecting those of us that live within this district. Specifically in the newly constructed 49th Senate district, I am looking for Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant to give us some answers to the questions that were asked by the Plainfield Patch. Agree with Mr. Peck or not his ideology, plan and positions are clearly spelled out for the voters to see. I would like to juxtapose his positions to hers …
Candidates are running to represent the 49th District in the Illinois Senate.
The two candidates seeking election to the 49th District State Senate seat may be from opposite ends of the political spectrum, but on Thursday night, they appeared to agree on one thing. “What we can’t have happen is for the state to put more responsibility on our local taxpayers,” Democrat Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant said of her opposition to a proposal that would shift the state’s nearly $90 billion pension liability onto local school districts. Republican Garrett Peck, a Plainfield village trustee, also opposes the pension shift. “I’m tired of watching Illinois bring itself to the verge of bankruptcy,” Peck said. “ … I’ve decided I want to reach out to residents and say, ‘What are your thoughts?’” Peck went on the offensive, several times…

Plainfield village trustee Garrett Peck is the second state candidate to demand legislative salaries be slashed by 10 percent.
Editor's note: The following is taken in part by a press release issued by the campaign of Garrett Peck. State Senate candidate Garrett Peck on Thursday issued a press release calling for a legislative pay freeze. Peck, who is running against Will County Regional Superintendent of Schools Jennifer-Bertino Tarrant for the new 49th District seat, is advocating a freeze of salary and benefits until the state's debt crisis is solved. “I don’t think I could look my constituents in the eye if I took pay increases out of their pockets, while Illinois families are struggling to pay the bills,” Peck said in a press release. “What kind of example is that to set, when politicians can’t pay vendors and providers, but take a pay increase? It’s …

Whether done anonomously or publicly, a case of willful maliciousness with intent to inflict damage should be relatively easy to sort out from a case of a wiseguy just being a wiseguy.
