Illinois House Votes to End Concealed-Carry Ban

A law that would end Illinois' status as the last state in the nation without concealed-carry provisions passed the House with enough votes to override a likely veto.

Written by Darren McRoy By an 85-30 vote, the Illinois House moved on Friday to approve a law allowing certified residents to carry concealed firearms, which would end Illinois' status as the only state in the nation to completely prohibit carrying guns in public. According to Reuters, the "shall-issue" law, supported by Democratic Speaker Michael Madigan, mandates that concealed-carry permits be issued to Firearm Owners Identification Card-holders who have completed 16 hours of training; it maintains the ban on firearms in many places, including government buildings, schools, stadiums and bars. "Criminals are cowards," Rep. Mike Bost, a southern Illinois Republican, told the Associated Press before the vote. "If they know there's an …

Sunday Comic: Will Concealed Carry Be Good for Illinois?

Residents of our state will soon have the right to carry concealed weapons in public, but that doesn't mean safety is guaranteed.

Guns in Public Places: Where Do You Stand?

On Feb. 19 and Feb. 22, the state will stage public hearings to discuss a new concealed carry handgun law for Illinois.

Gun control hearings will convene before an Illinois House committee later this month, says Speaker Mike Madigan, and there will be much talk about a new concealed carry law. One hearing will take place in Chicago on Feb. 22, at the Michael A. Bilandic Building in Chicago. The other will be in Springfield on Feb. 19 at the Capitol. “In light of events in recent months in Illinois and in other parts of the country, it’s appropriate and necessary that we give a full vetting to proposed state legislation on this matter," reads a statement from Madigan. "These hearings will provide an opportunity for gun-safety advocates, gun-rights supporters and members of the law enforcement community to offer their views and argue their cases to …

Letter: The Fireball of Truth - Gun Laws Kill Innocent Americans

Send letters to the editor to shannon.antinori@patch.com.

It is way past time that someone pointed up the absolute truth about new gun legislation: the only thing they can do is enable the slaughter of innocent Americans. It is so very obvious, I'm forced to point this up myself. Any politician or pundit that can fog a mirror should be able to understand this. Let's start with facts. Not media facts, but real facts from the F.B.I. Violence in the United States has been in an astonishingly steep decline for the last twenty years. Here it is: http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2011/crime-in-the-u.s.-2011/fbi-releases-2011-crime-statistics . For 2011, violent crime rate for the year was 386.3 offenses per 100,000 inhabitants a 4.5 percent decrease from the 2010 rate. Check it all …

Gun-Control Laws Better Than Executive Order: Durbin

While visiting Fox Valley, senator says gun control is only part of the solution to mass violence.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said Friday that he would rather see Congress arrive at a “sensible solution” on curbing gun violence than see the president issue some kind of executive order attempting to remedy the problem. Still, in light of the power wielded by the NRA and the gun industry, which many congressmen will not stand up to, Durbin said he would support President Barack Obama if he does issue executive orders in an attempt to rein in gun violence. “Whatever it takes to keep our streets and schools safe, I’ll support,” he said. “But I hope that we could do it in the the normal congressional process,” he added. “I know that it’s tough. I know the politics on this issue very, very well, and I know some of my colleagues are not prepared to…

Is Dick Durbin really not aware that the City of Chicago has some of the most stringent laws in the country regarding guns...and nearly the highest murder rate. Coincidence? As for "John Tips"...really? Yes...legals cocaine foreveryone will certainly solve the problem. Not closing and securing our borders (where most of the drugs are coming in), and deporting illegals with illegal weapons who …   more ›

Letter: Vote 'Em Out — Not Shoot 'Em Out

Send letters to the editor to Shannon.Antinori@patch.com.

Let’s get real: It’s time American society recognizes that lack of meaningful regulation with respect to the AVAILABILITY of certain types of guns and ammunition is a major contributing factor to shooting deaths.  Even the majority of National Rifle Association members favor sensible measures to keep assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, body armor-piercing, jacketed and hollow point ammunition out of the wrong hands.  They know that NRA president Wayne LaPierre’s remedy of more guns is patently absurd!  He is little more than a well compensated lobbyist for the gun and ammunition industry, who disguises his venality with rants about “Second Amendment remedies”  and the necessity of  having “good guys with guns” to protect our civil …

Availability of guns has nothing to do with it, despite Mr. Bible's rant. Gun control fails on many levels: http://www.randywakeman.com/WhyGunControlJustDied.htm . Invariably, the 2.1 million uses of a firearm to prevent or thwart crime is never mentioned. Although the "mythical assault rifles" are mentioned again and again, the facts show that bare fists take more lives. Trevor Burrus, a …   more ›

Gun Control: Where Does Your Congressman Stand?

Patch contacted 10 newly elected representatives to find out what they plan to do to help curb gun violence in our country in the wake of last week's mass killing in Newtown, CT. Those who actually wanted to discuss the issue say it's time for a change.

When members of the 113th Congress take their seats in January, one of the top items on their agenda very well could be a new look at federal gun control laws.  In the wake of the Newtown, CT, tragedy of one week ago today, President Obama on Wednesday set a January deadline for his administration to "create concrete proposals" to curb gun violence in the United States. Obama also called on Congress to reinstate an assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 to "pursue the possibility of limiting high-capacity ammunition clips" and to "close a gun show loophole that allows people to purchase firearms from private dealers without a background check."  What will come of this renewed debate is yet to be seen, but what is certain is that …

Worry and Fear Grips Schools and Parents in Wake of Newtown Shooting and Local Threats

Random and disturbing threats in the Chicago area followed the Newtown school killings, underscoring vulnerabilities and prompting discussions of gun control and guns for teachers.

The first day of school after the Sandy Hook school massacre brought a wave of fear, worry and outright threats to Chicago-area communities as educators and police sought to reassure people that efforts to protect their children would be redoubled. Parents and educators everywhere were talking about school security even as incidents locally in the last three days underscored potential vulnerability. Here's a glimpse of what's taken place in the past few days. In Plainfield, District 202 officials and local police departments (Plainfield, Joliet and Will County) scheduled a review of security protocols and active-shooter response tactics. Meanwhile, there has been a beefed-up police presence at District 202 schools in the days following the…

It would not be hard to get a certain amout of teachers certified in handgun use.  Gun Control, as some call it is not the issue as many have said. Tell me, how many thugs got their hands on guns up   in Cook County where "Gun Control" was so strict? No matter how tough the laws are, people will always find ways to get their hands on them illegally.  Wake up people, having a way to protect …   more ›
