Two Plainfield men who packed their pickup truck with so many stolen items that the backend almost touched the ground were arrested on charges of theft early Wednesday morning. Plainfield police spotted the truck driven by Keith J. Wells, 21, and Nicholas Eugene Davito, 18, near the Fraser Road entrance to the shuttered Rizzi’s Flower Garden & Aquatic Center, 16202 S. Route 59, Sgt. Mike Fisher said. That the truck was dragging so low to the ground and the driver was near a closed business raised the suspicions of the patrol officers who stopped them at about 12:25 a.m., Fish said. Fire destroyed the end unit of a storage facility in Plainfield Township Wednesday night, Deputy Fire Chief Jon Stratton said Thursday. The blaze's source was a pickup truck parked inside the unoccupied unit, but investigators have not determined what cause the vehicle to combust, Stratton said. The Plainfield Fire Protection District was notified of the fire at 2501 Von Esch Road shortly after 10:30 p.m. and took about 15 minutes to extinguish. While the unit and its contents were destroyed, there was no damage to the four remaining storage units, Stratton said. The loss was pegged at about $50,000, he said.

The Shorewood man who killed a motorcyclist in a roll-over accident on Route 59 Saturday was drunk and uninsured at the time of the collision, Plainfield police said Sunday. David C. Dietrich, 32, of 902 Bittersweet, has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, resulting in the death of another; driving under the influence; improper lane usage; driving too fast for conditions; and operating an uninsured motor vehichle. The victim was George A. Weikum, 58, of Naperville, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Weikum was the owner of G & C Landscape & Building Inc. in Plainfield. Plainfield police say they do not know what caused a Shorewood man to lose control of his pickup truck and roll into oncoming traffic, killing a motorcycle driver.
A Naperville motorcycle driver was killed Saturday afternoon after being struck by an out-of-control pickup truck that crossed a Route 59 median and rolled into oncoming traffic, Plainfield police said. Route 59 was closed for hours between 135th Street and 143rd Street as police reconstructed the accident in which George A. Weikum, 58, was hit while driving his 2010 Harley Davidson motorcycle northbound on Route 59, just north of Joseph Street, according to a police report issued Saturday night. Police did not spectulate on what may have caused David C. Dietrich, 32, of Shorewood, to lose control of his 2005 Ford pickup at about 4:30 p.m. Dietrich's truck crossed the center median, rolled over and struck Weikum. Weikum was pronounced dead…
