Children found the liquid metal near downtown Plainfield.
Hazmat crews were cleaning up a mercury spill Friday early evening in Plainfield. Plainfield Deputy Fire Chief Jon Stratton said he didn’t know the source of the mercury, which was found by some kids near Eastern Avenue and Spring Hill Lane Friday afternoon. “We found some glass lying around, a rubber lid — it looks like a beaker was broken,” Stratton said. He said the kids scooped some of the mercury up in a Pepsi lid and took it home, where a concerned parent called authorities. Stratton said the children were not hurt, but cautioned against handling mercury. “You shouldn’t be handling it at all with bare hands,” he said. Troy Fire Protection District was alerted by a fire alarm call.
No one was injured at a fire at The Timbers of Shorewood Retirement Community and Assisted Living Thursday afternoon. Troy Fire Protection District Chief Steve Engledow said the call came in about 4:09 p.m. Thursday, and was an activated fire alarm at the building. The fire was on the second floor, near the boiler. Staff at The Timbers had to move residents from that wing into the dining area while firefighters worked to put out the fire and determine that it was safe for the residents to return to their rooms. "The staff reacted very quickly and moved people out of the way, so that was good," Engledow said. A 24-year-old Plainfield resident was airlifted to the hospital and charged with driving under the influence after a crash on Interstate 55 near Shorewood closed all lanes of the highway for a period Tuesday night. The crash happened at 10:25 p.m. on Interstate 55 South, a half-mile north of Route 52, Illinois State Police Master Sergeant Bill Fuentes said. A passenger car rear-ended a tractor-trailer, then struck the center median. Elijah D. Amant, 24, of Plainfield, remained in critical condition Wednesday afternoon at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, where he was airlifted Tuesday night. The driver of the tractor-trailer was taken to Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center. His name and condition were not available. State …
