Nut-Free Bakery, Mexican Restaurant Come to Plainfield

What's happening on the local business scene.

A nut-free bakery will open by the end of March in Plainfield, according to the Facebook page for Callie's Cuties Bake Shop.

The bakery will open near La Dolce Vita Italian restaurant at 16108 S. Route 59, bringing fresh-baked treats to everyone, including nut allergy sufferers.

According to the Callie's Cuties website, owner Laura Meehan was inspired to open the business after a terrifying near miss with daughter Callie, then just 2 years old.

"In November, 2005 my husband Tom and I almost lost our precious daughter Callie to an allergy of cashews – a simple tree nut. "It didn’t take an entire bag of cashews, just two tiny nuts ...  To this day, 8 years later, I still cannot think of the incident without crying. Thanks to Benedryl and the Plainfield Paramedics – Callie is still here with us today," Meehan writes on the site.
