Despite Warmup, Some Plainfield-Area Roads Still Treacherous

Motorists were reporting major delays and slippery conditions Wednesday morning.

As Chicagoland slowly came out of the deep freeze Wednesday, area roads remained slick and there were major delays for motorists in some areas.

As of about 10 a.m. Monday, the temperature had climbed to a whopping 7 degrees.

Despite the above-zero temperature, some local roads remained slippery and travel was slow going. Here are some of the areas identified by Plainfield Patch readers who were out and about early Monday:

  • I-55 north from Route 126 all the way to 355
  • Van Dyke Road (between 127th and 135th Street)
  • Northbound Route 59 from Plainfield all the way to 95th Street
  • Caton Farm Road and County Line Road
  • Plainfield/Naperville Road (backup at 127th Street)

One reader also reported a car in a ditch on 127th Street near the Tuttle Estates subdivision.

Here's what some readers had to say on Facebook about the traffic headaches:
  • Heather H: Here's an idea for Dist. 202... Start school one hour late on days like this when roads are bad, severe whether, etc. that would give all the people going to work time and less headaches trying to get there. It would allow the bus drivers and teens driving to be safer and not so stressed ... Caton Farm was a nightmare taking daughter to south. Blinking Red stop light at Caton and Ridge
  • Beth F: 59 North is crawling! Ugh!
  • Dawn C.Caton farm road near county line area is very slick! I imagine it is everywhere!
  • Don O: slid right through that intersection on a red light - thank god the cross traffic was paying attention and waited for my drama to unravel - we were all safe but slick slick slick
  • Beth S.I live right off 59 and 111th and it's a mess. Not sure why it's backed up but it went all the way to 135th. I took Van Dyke home and there was no one on that street. Stay off 59 north!
  • Jill M Was on 55 between 5 and 6....no crashes or anything, just very slow moving traffic all the way thru to 294
  • Kate BThe on ramp to I355 is a sheet of ice. Then I55 opens wide up!
  • Katie M: This whole town is a major backup!! Plainfield/Naperville road is backed up at 127th
  • Karen HMy husband has been driving since 6:20 am to Lombard from North Plainfield he is still at 55th & 355. I get it it's cold and we have snow. but this is day 3 - put down some sand already.
Travel was hazardous on Tuesday, too, when state police warned drivers to stay off the roads if possible and avoid icy stretches of I-55 and I-80.
